Visiting lecture series on ancient Greek science

Jonas Ciurlionis, of the Department of Philosophy at Vilnius University, will be visiting the department next week as part of the ERASMUS teacher exchange program. While here, Jonas will give an open four-part lecture series entitled “Understanding Ancient Greek Science,” with the following schedule:

  1. Tue 21 April, 16.30-18.00 – G327 – Introduction. The idea of four elements in Ancient Greek Thought – where does it come from? Basic foundations of Greek philosophy. From Physics to Metaphysics. The idea of Cosmos. Pre-Socratic philosophy. Aristotle.
  2. Wed 22 April, 16.30-18.00 – G316 – Physics. The idea of motion. Void and Space. Time. Physics of four elements. Thermo Cosmology. Aristotle. Ptolemy. John Philoponus.
  3. Thu 23 April, 17.15-18.45 – G106 – Medicine. The concept of the four elements in Medicine. Disease and Treatment. Understanding the human body. Physiology and Psychology. Hippocrates. Galen. Dioscorides.
  4. Fri 24 April, 10.15-13.00 – G106 – Mathematics. Arithmetics and Geometry. The concept of number. Transformation of geometrical figures. Squaring the Circle. Infinite vs. finite. Identity, Sameness and Difference. Plato. Archimedes. Euclides. Heron. Hypathia.
